It is highly effective for situations where fish like mahi-mahi or needlefish are being chased on the surface, but yellowtail amberjack (Hiramasa) aren’t breaking the surface, and despite high activity levels, lures with strong surface pull like the Ryan or Rodeo aren’t getting bites. Its designed to target just below the surface, one level down, where subtle presentation is key.

Due to its inherent action, the GILLAlacks self-propulsion and will stop moving if not constantly retrieved, making it easier for fish to lose interest. The key is to keep reeling continuously. It performs well at medium to very high retrieval speeds, and in situations where speed triggers bites, its effectiveness is considered on par with the Rodeo.

The basic technique for the 220 size is to retrieve at high speed while occasionally adding speed variation through long jerks. This approach takes advantage of the strong flashing effect and appeal created by intensified rolling during these moments.
